Class: 8th Grade Earth Science
Unit: Astronomy
Topic: Moon

Instructional Objectives:
Students should be able to:
1. Explain the theory of the Moon's origin according to the reading.
2. Identify features of the Moon's surface.
3. Identify Galileo as the first astronomer to observe the moon in detail.

Time and Activity:
5 min (Intro) - I will introduce the article that they will be reading and ask if anyone has any predictions
about how the moon was formed. I will also ask if anyone has ever observed the moon. I will go on to ask
if they could make any guesses about what they were looking at. This way I could explain that when Galileo first
observed the moon he had no way of knowing what he was actually looking at.
20 min - Start the students off reading the article and highlighting the important words. Go through the
first paragraph with them then allow them to read through it themselves.
15 min - Read through the rest of the selection with the students to make sure they have gotten the
main points that you wanted them to get.
10 min - Have the students go through the selection and do the the "Five W's" for the "Looking at the
Moon From Earth" part of the reading.

Assignment:
- Students will have to read and highlight the article. They will then have to use the "Five W's", in their
notebooks, to pull out some major points from the second part of the reading.
